This collection features hansatsu (domain-issued paper currency) from the Awa Province and Chōshū Province during the Genbun era (1736–1741) and Bakumatsu period (mid-19th century).

  • Awa Province, Tokushima Domain - Silver 1 monme, Genbun Era: This domain-issued note represents the Awa Tokushima Domain's silver 1 monme currency, known as the Awa-Awaji silver note. Issued during the Genbun era, this note is a part of the Tokushima domain's financial system, which was integral to local commerce. The Awa area, located in present-day Tokushima Prefecture, utilized these silver notes as a means to facilitate trade within the domain. This note is classified as a Daimyō note (issued by a feudal lord).

  • Chōshū Province, Hagi Domain - Silver 1 monme, Bakumatsu Period: This domain-issued note from Hagi in Chōshū was part of the Bōchō Tōyō Ginsatsu (Bōchō circulating silver notes). Issued during the Bakumatsu period, this note features the Hagi Domain's 1 monme silver currency, which was utilized in the Chōshū region (modern-day Yamaguchi Prefecture) for everyday transactions, serving as a key part of the domain’s efforts to maintain stability during a period of increasing social unrest and financial challenges leading to the Meiji restoration.

Both notes are considered damaged, but their historical significance offers a rare glimpse into the Edo period's currency systems and the role of regional domains in maintaining economic order.
