This collection of hansatsu (domain-issued paper currency) from the Kansei era (1789–1801), part of the Edo period, consists of damaged notes with signs of age such as fading, creases, and tears. These notes reflect a time of social stability, but also the economic challenges that began to arise. The domains and their present-day prefectures are:

  • Owari Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Kansei 2 (1790), from the Owari domain, now part of Aichi Prefecture.
  • Shinano Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Kansei 8 (1796), from the Shinano domain, now part of Nagano Prefecture.
  • Ise Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Kansei 4 (1792), from the Ise domain, now part of Mie Prefecture.
  • Tsu Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Kansei 6 (1794), from the Tsu domain, now part of Mie Prefecture.
  • Kaga Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Kansei 5 (1793), from the Kaga domain, now part of Ishikawa Prefecture.

The Kansei era saw a period of relative peace, but rising economic concerns, including food shortages and an unstable currency, contributed to internal tensions. Despite the damage, these hansatsu offer valuable historical insight into Japan's local economies and currency systems in the late 18th century.
