This collection of hansatsu (domain-issued paper currency) from the Keio era (1865–1868) features damaged notes from five different domains. These notes were issued during the Bakumatsu period, just before the Meiji Restoration, and reflect the challenges faced by the Tokugawa shogunate as it neared its end. The following domains are represented:
- Higo Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Keio 2 (1866), displaying the domain's distinctive designs.
- Satsuma Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Keio 3 (1867), featuring intricate symbols of the domain’s power.
- Kii Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Keio 1 (1865), marked with the domain’s official insignia.
- Tosa Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Keio 2 (1866), with symbols representing the Tosa samurai class.
- Aizu Domain – Silver 1 monme note, issued in Keio 3 (1867), a rare example of the Aizu currency during the Bakumatsu period.
The notes in this collection exhibit the wear typical of such items from this era, adding to their historical value. These pieces provide a fascinating look at the local economies in the final years of the Edo period.
