Musashi Province Hansatsu – Silver-Backed Note from the Ōshi Domain, Keio 3 (1867)
This rare hansatsu note from Musashi Province, issued in the Keio 3 era (1867), represents one monme of silver and was used in the Ōshi Domain (忍藩), located in what is now Gyōda City, Saitama Prefecture. The note, described as a rice deposit voucher (米預切手), highlights the integration of rice-based economies with Edo-period monetary systems.
The Ōshi Domain, a fudai (hereditary) feudal domain, played an important role during the late Edo period. Historically, the area was notable for Ōshi Castle, which became famous during the Sengoku period when Narita Ujinaga defended it in the Siege of Ōshi against Ishida Mitsunari—a dramatic episode depicted in the movie The Floating Castle (Nobō no Shiro).
The note features standard qualities of hansatsu from this time, both in design and function, and circulated during the turbulent Bakumatsu period leading to the Meiji Restoration. This piece offers insight into the domain's fiscal policies and local trade practices. Its condition is described as fair to average (並品中).
