This rare silver note originates from the Sekiyado Domain in Shimosa Province (modern-day Noda City, Chiba Prefecture) and was issued in the unique Senshu Fushio area of Osaka (Sakai City). The note is valued at one monme (銀壱匁), which is equivalent to 2 sho of rice (米2升), and was used for local trade and transactions during the late Edo period. Although the note comes from the Sekiyado Domain, its special designation as a Senshu Fushio note indicates that it was used in a region far from the domain’s primary territory.
This historical piece offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse and intricate nature of Japan’s domain-issued currency system, reflecting the unique trade and economic practices of the Edo period.
